Volumetric weight calculator
Free volumetric weight calculator: chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric weight) for air freight, courier/parcel, LTL and sea freight. With divisor table and explanation.
What is the volumetric weight?
Light but bulky shipments take up cargo space. That is why carriers charge not the actual weight, but the chargeable weight – the higher value of actual and volumetric weight. The volumetric weight converts the volume via a transport-mode-specific Divisor into a chargeable weight.
Chargeable weight = max( actual weight , volumetric weight )
| Mode of transport | Divisor | corresponds to |
|---|---|---|
| Air freight (IATA) | 1 : 6000 | 167 kg/m³ |
| Courier / Express / Parcel | 1 : 5000 | 200 kg/m³ |
| Road / LTL | 1 : 3000 | 333 kg/m³ |
| Sea freight (LCL) | 1 : 1000 | 1000 kg/m³ |
Guideline values for common practice. Individual carriers use different divisors – when in doubt, check the freight contract.
